Love at the Top of His Lungs

Listening to music whilst driving was one of the only times he actually listened to music. He didn’t find himself presented with the opportunity in his daily comings and goings to put on an album and enjoy it. Driving was perfect for music because he really had nothing else to do. The other great thing was the isolation. He was alone in his car, an island, and he could listen to the music at incredible volumes without offending anyone else. The volume wasn’t as good as the freedom he had, alone, to sing along at the top of his lungs.

He loved losing himself in a song. The melody would draw him in surrounded by guitar hooks and a groovy beat. He would find him singing the lyrics that he wasn’t even aware he knew, but that were so true to how he felt about love, relationships or anything else really. He loved the feeling of arriving at his destination and not remembering how he got there. He would be so lost in the music that he’d begin to drive subconsciously.

He noticed something that seemed to occur after songs that he particularly enjoyed. He would continue to sing them. In the few seconds between one track and another, he would reprise the song that was playing last. Although the song was completely finished and he didn’t want to switch back and listen to it again, he couldn’t let go of it completely. His heart was still filled with the emotions and sentiments of the track and he wanted to relive it even as the next song began.

If the next song was catchy enough or meaningful enough, it was able to distract him from the loss of the last song. It would just take longer for him to get into it. It would be unfamiliar and it would not hold the same magic of the song before it. He’d try to enjoy the new song, but would secretly be wishing for the familiarity and pleasure of that tune he loved so much. But the melody was confused by the new track rattling in his ears. He didn’t have much of a choice but to give in and sing the new song at the top of his lungs.

Of course, that was how he was with her. After she had been gone, he still sang her song. He still thought of her. He still longed for her scent, the sound of her voice, the glow of her smile. Her essence lingered in his mind and around his house. The physical connection was severed, but there was still a binding of heart that kept her melody floating around his person. Even though there was a new girl, a very lovely and beautiful girl, he still had an old song inside him that he didn’t want to relinquish yet.

He’d give anything for it to happen again, he’d was desperate for it. There was little he wanted more than to lose himself in a new love like he had in the old one, and find himself arriving in some sweet blissful place not remembering how he got there. He didn’t want to mindfully try to enjoy the new song, he was eager to love subconsciously.Car Radio
