“Like” Joel van Vliet on Facebook!

It could have been my greatest accomplishment. It could have been the most triumphant moment in my career. I could have brought the dreams of all the little boys and girls who watched Sci-Fi cartoons, or shows like Star Trek into reality. I was on the cusp of creating a  Teleportation device!

I had started with simple things: a beaker, a mug. I placed them in my 2 foot Teleporter. At first it didn’t work. The mug just got a little burnt with my first attempt. After recalculating and reworking the machine, I sent a beaker, but it just disappeared. A few more attempts later and I was sending inanimate objects from one machine to its twin sister (as I affectionately called them: the twins). It was magnificent! Finally, teleportation was reality. But to send some cups was one thing…

After succeeding with living vegetable matter, I planted a small garden in the device, I decided it was time to try something a little more controversial. I went to the cages and retrieved one of our many lab mice. The small white creature crawled around my gloved hand trustingly. I placed it into “Teleporter A” and set the dial for “Teleporter Sally”. Seconds later, and with a heave of anticipation and nervousness, I opened “Teleporter Sally” to see the ball of white fur scampering around, a little dazed, but perfectly fine. The pretty nurses and I rejoiced!

It was only after trying the same experiment on more mice, a couple rabbits and a guinea pig that I decided to make the big one: a Teleporter big enough for a human being. After it was constructed a did a series of experiments with large plants, frozen meat and a lion (all successful). I was ready to try it on a human. I asked a friend of mine if he would participate, and after assuring him that it worked perfectly with the other mammals, he was honoured to donate his time to the project.

We put a lab coat on him and had him stand inside “Unit A2″ (named after the smaller pioneer “Teleporter A”). I turned the dial to “Unit Sally 2″ and instantly the pretty nurses and I ran to her door. I ordered one of my girls to press the release button and the door slid open with ease. Inside was a somewhat jittery, but seemingly healthy man. The nurses and I rejoiced once more, but it was too soon.

“Look!” one of the nurses gasped, pointing at the dear man.

His face was fading into a sickly grey colour and then a deathly white. I examined him quickly to find everything in him was together and seemed fine. His skin wrinkled and his eyes lost their colour entirely. The honest strength, once in his face, was gone. He fell to the floor, his breaths coming slowly wheezing out of him. His skin began to become transparent. All of him was becoming transparent.

“What’s wrong? What’s happening to you?” I yelled.

“I don’t know! You’re the scientist.”

I held the man until he faded out of my arms and into oblivion. I sat on the floor surrounded by my nurses. One cried softly, another held her. I stared at the floor where once lay a man who gave his life for a silly experiment. What could teleporting change? What good could it do? Was it worth a life?

What was I going to tell his family? I wondered. What I could I tell his wife? I could teleport his body. But I couldn’t teleport his soul… his life.
